The 8:07 Is Cancelled, The City Is Not

The announcement was almost unnecessary; everyone on the platform had already read the water. Within four minutes the crowd had reorganised itself into people walking the tracks, people negotiating with rickshaws, and people calmly buying vada pav for a journey that had just become considerably longer.

Nobody arrived together. Within ten minutes there was a debate about the drainage, a shared theory about which line would open first, and a man ordering chai for everyone and refusing all money. The rain stopped. They dispersed. Nobody exchanged a number.

The water is not coming from above. It is coming from the side, from the road, from a bus that passed forty seconds ago, and from below, mysteriously. The umbrella addresses none of this. It is carried anyway, held high, a small flag of intent.
