Down Nine With Six Minutes Left, a Team of Thirty-Somethings Wins by Two Without Its Leading Shot-Taker

Dennis fouled out at 4:11 with the score at 58–51 against us. He had eleven points, four fouls he disputed and one he did not, and he sat down on the bench with his head in a towel like a man in an actual sport.

What happened next has no explanation and I have watched the film twice.

Owen — the same Owen who scored last week's disputed game on the back of a receipt — hit three shots in ninety seconds. Owen does not shoot. Owen has taken, by my count, nine shots all season. He took four in that stretch and made three, and after the third he did not celebrate, he pointed at the bench, at Dennis, which is the kind of thing that happens in films and does not happen on a Thursday in a municipal gym.

We got it to one with 40 seconds on a possession where nobody on our team touched the ball except in the last two seconds. Their captain missed a free throw. Marcus got the rebound with his elbows out, took the contact, and made both.

Final 64–62. Kyle refereed again and had a clean game and nobody said a word to him, which after last week is its own small piece of progress.

Dennis was still in the towel when it ended. He did not see the last two minutes. We have told him about it eleven times.

Four Years on the Roster, and It Turns Out the Quiet One Was Just Never Given the Ball

Owen is thirty-eight, works in insurance, and has never once asked for a shot. He rebounds, he sets the screen nobody thanks him for, and he leaves at 10:45 because he has a daughter.

I have been captain for four years and I have run maybe two plays for him. Not out of any judgment — he was simply never the answer to a question I was asking, and I now think the question was wrong.

There is a version of this piece that says he was hiding a skill. He was not. He is a mediocre shooter who made three in ninety seconds. That is what happened and it is enough. The thing worth writing down is that a man came off a bench he has been on for four years and did something that will be talked about at that gym for a decade.

Semifinal Draw Pairs Us With the Phone-and-Receipt Opponents; Deb Has Been Notified

Tuesday, 9:40 p.m., against the team from the disputed scoreboard game. Deb replied to our filing last week with three words. The three words were “scoreboard is fixed.” She was, as ever, correct and finished.

Both captains have privately agreed to bring a scorer each. There will be two receipts this time.
