The Drilling Starts at 9:40 and Stops at 11:15 and I Have Rebuilt My Working Day Around Two Strangers

Fourth floor of the building opposite, two men, and a rhythm I could now transcribe.

Deep work has moved to before 9:40, which is a sentence I would once have found insufferable and now organise my life by. Calls have moved to the middle, because a call is the only thing drilling cannot ruin — you simply say there is drilling and everybody says oh yes I can hear it, and that is eleven seconds of the small talk gone.

They finish on Friday. I have three days left of a schedule that is, embarrassingly, the best one I have had all year.

Three Years at the Same Window and the Only Thing That Has Genuinely Changed Is the Tree

I keep a note. Not deliberately at first — it started as a line at the bottom of my day's to-do list, and now it is a file with about nine hundred entries.

Read back, almost nothing changes. The shop opposite has had the same shutter since 2023. The scooters park in the same wrong place. The man who waters the plants outside the tailor does it at the same time and has done for three years.

The tree is the exception, and the reason the tree stands out is that it changes on a schedule slow enough that no single day records it. There is no entry that says the tree changed. There are two hundred entries three years apart that describe completely different objects.

I do not have a conclusion. I have the observation that I would not have noticed the one thing that is actually moving if I had not been writing down the things that are not.

A Meeting Was Cancelled at 2:58 for a Three O'Clock and I Lost the Entire Hour Anyway

Two minutes' notice. An hour returned to me, free and clear, at the best part of the afternoon.

I did not use it. I read the message, felt the small illegal joy, made a coffee, sat down, and then spent fifty minutes doing the thing where you tidy the edges of work rather than doing work, and at 3:52 I had an empty hour behind me and nothing to show.

The hour was not the constraint. It has never been the hour.

Nine Days of Eating Lunch in the Other Room Before It Stopped Feeling Like Skiving

Twenty minutes, other room, no screen. That is the entire intervention and I resisted it for three years on the grounds that it was obviously fine to eat at the desk.

It is fine to eat at the desk. It is also the reason I could not have told you what I had for lunch on any day of 2025.

The nine days is the part worth reporting. For over a week it felt like getting away with something, and I kept the laptop lid up in the next room for the first four of them, and I only stopped when I noticed I was doing it.

People Ask If I Am Lonely and After Three Years I Have Stopped Giving the Defensive Answer

The defensive answer is a list. I see people, I have a life, here is my week, and it is all true and it is all beside the point, and I gave that answer for about two years.

The honest answer is that working alone removed a specific thing, which is not company. It is being seen doing something ordinary. Nobody watches me have a slightly bad Tuesday. Nobody notices that I have been quiet since Thursday.

What I did about it is not more socialising — I tried that and it was exhausting and did not touch this at all. It is that four people now hear from me at ordinary volume about nothing much, most weeks, and this paper is one of the ways.

So: not lonely. Unwitnessed, which is a different problem, and the thing about a different problem is that you cannot fix it with the answer to the first one.
