The Kettle Has Been Replaced

The Kettle That Took Four Minutes Is Gone and the One That Took Its Place Takes Ninety Seconds

It happened between Friday evening and Tuesday morning. No email. No note. The old one — white, scaled, with a lid you had to hold — is simply not there, and in its place is a black one with a light in the base.

I want to record the reaction accurately, because it was not what I expected. The new kettle is better in every measurable way. It boils in ninety seconds. The lid stays open on its own. Nobody is pleased.

The four minutes were not dead time. Four minutes at a kettle is the only reliably unscheduled interval on this floor, and it is where roughly everything I have ever published came from. You could not get four minutes with Devesh from procurement any other way. You certainly could not book it.

Ninety seconds is not enough to start a conversation in. It is enough to have one already in progress and then leave. By Tuesday afternoon people were standing at the counter after the kettle had already boiled, holding a full cup, finishing a sentence. The interval is being defended manually.

Somebody Has Started Washing Other People's Mugs, and the Floor Cannot Decide Whether This Is Kindness or a Message

The mug shelf holds fourteen mugs of which about five are actively claimed and the rest are held in a kind of common ownership that nobody has written down.

Since roughly Wednesday last week, mugs left in the sink overnight have been washed, dried and put back on the shelf by the morning. Every time. Without exception.

Nobody knows who. The obvious theory is that it is kindness, and the floor has spent nine days refusing to accept the obvious theory, because a sustained anonymous good deed in an office reads as pointed. Two people have started washing their own mugs immediately after use, which suggests they think it is aimed at them.

I have no information. I will say that the drying is thorough in a way that suggests somebody who is not in a hurry, and the only people on this floor who are not in a hurry at six in the evening are the two who cannot get a seat on the express bus anyway.

The Notice Says Please Take Your Items Home on Fridays and It Is Laminated, Which Is How You Know It Has Lost

A notice that is printed on paper is a request. A notice that has been laminated is an admission that the request has been made before and did not work.

This one is the third on that fridge in fourteen months and the first to be laminated. It went up on Monday. By Tuesday evening there were two containers behind it, one of which was there before the notice.

The fridge purge was three weeks ago. Whatever it achieved, it did not achieve this.

The Desk by the Window Became Available on Monday Morning and Was Permanently Occupied by Tuesday at Nine

Ravi moved to the third floor on Friday. The desk he vacated is the one at the end by the south window, which is the best desk on this floor by a margin nobody disputes.

It was empty for approximately eleven working hours. On Tuesday morning it had a jacket on the chair, a charger in the socket, and a mug, and it has had them ever since.

Nobody is going to contest it. The person who took it is well liked, has been here six years, and — this is the part that actually settled it — did not announce anything. There was no email. He simply sat down.

Announcing it would have made it a claim, and a claim can be objected to. Sitting down made it a fact. I have watched three desk transitions on this floor now and the silent ones have gone through every time.
